Endovenous Microwave Ablation (EMWA) is a relatively new and unique method for treating varicose veins. The treatment uses a local anaesthetic and is minimally invasive. Endovenous means inside the vein, so the next thing the doctor has to do is to get inside your vein
Until now, Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) has been at the forefront of varicose vein treatment, with EMWA following a similar pattern and incorporating identical fundamental principles of EVLA, however utilising microwaves as opposed to laser with the same end goal of treating the varicose veins.
Endovenous ablation sees the destruction of a vein to a degree where it is killed and shrivels away through the insertion of a device into the problematic vein itself. This is similar to the modern generation of lasers that are used to treat varicose veins, EMWA does not require any contact with the vein wall itself in order to successfully ablate the vein, it generates an electromagnetic field that ablates the vein.
The safety precautions required during EMWA treatment are less stringent as those associated with EVLA and there is no requirement of safety goggles for the medical team or patient compared to EVLA. Through results of research we can conclude that the EMWA is most certainly a new and revolutionary way of treating varicose veins.
