New Varicose Vein Treatment Consultancy

An initial consultation will be used to explain the condition and the range of new varicose vein treatments available, outline of the procedure and answer all questions relating to the condition and its treatment.

After the initial consultation, a detailed assessment will be conducted to help us recommend the best and most appropriate treatment for your condition.

Following the procedure/treatment, we will schedule a follow-up consultation to review the treatment and address any additional questions you may have.

New varicose veins treatment

SONOVEIN: High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

Besides having the latest methods and lasers to treat varicose veinsDr. OMAR Abu-Bakr is the first surgeon in UK and the second worldwide using the HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) SONOVEIN S treatment, which is a NON-INVASIVE method (watch the video below).
Dr. OMAR Abu-Bakr is also the second surgeon in UK to treat varicose veins using the Endovenous Microwave Ablation (EMWA).

The technology is the newest in varicose veins treatment field and is a NON-INVASIVE treatment that works by focusing the ultrasound energy at one point (the Focal Point) in the venous wall, doing so that ultrasound energy is absorbed by the water inside the cells composing the venous wall (the intracellular water), the water`s molecules start to vibrate changing transforming the ultrasound energy into heat energy that will lead to cellular death as well as contraction in collagen fibre in the venous wall which means that the vein is dead and closed and the body will absorb it in time. To deliver that energy we do not need to introduce any catheter in the vein and the amount of the needed local anaesthesia is way less than that needed when using laser or other endovenous procedures.

Endovenous Microwave Ablation of the veins (EMWA)

Endovenous Microwave Ablation (EMWA) is a relatively new and unique method for treating varicose veins. The treatment uses a local anaesthetic and is minimally invasive. Endovenous means inside the vein, so the next thing the doctor has to do is to get inside your vein

Until now, Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) has been at the forefront of varicose vein treatment, with EMWA following a similar pattern and incorporating identical fundamental principles of EVLA, however utilising microwaves as opposed to laser with the same end goal of treating the varicose veins.

Endovenous ablation sees the destruction of a vein to a degree where it is killed and shrivels away through the insertion of a device into the problematic vein itself. This is similar to the modern generation of lasers that are used to treat varicose veins, EMWA does not require any contact with the vein wall itself in order to successfully ablate the vein, it generates an electromagnetic field that ablates the vein.

The safety precautions required during EMWA treatment are less stringent as those associated with EVLA and there is no requirement of safety goggles for the medical team or patient compared to EVLA. Through results of research we can conclude that the EMWA is most certainly a new and revolutionary way of treating varicose veins.

Dr Omar Abu-Bakr has trained and is a certified practitioner of EMWA

Endovenous Laser Ablation of the veins (EVLA)

EVLA is a method of treating varicose veins without surgery. Instead of tying and removing the abnormal veins they are heated by a laser. Endovenous means inside the vein, so the next thing the doctor has to do is to get inside your vein. The heat kills the walls of the affected veins and the human body then naturally absorbs the dead tissue resulting in the abnormal veins being destroyed. EVLA can be carried out in a simple treatment room rather than an operating theatre.

A small amount of local anaesthetic is injected into the skin over the vein and a needle inserted into it to allow a laser fibre to be inserted to the affected area. The laser is fired up and pulled down the affected vein. There may be a smell or taste burning but the patient won’t feel any pain. The laser is then removed and the needle puncture covered with a small dressing.

Treatment usually takes about 20-30 minutes per leg. You may also have some foam sclerotherapy or some avulsions undertaken and a compression stocking is then put on.

Transluminal Occlusion Of the Perforators (TRLOP)

Perforators are the communicating veins between the deep (main) venous system and the superficial (secondary) venous system. Leaving these veins untreated or treating them incorrectly is one of the main causes of varicose veins recurrence.

TRLOP is a technique to close and ablate the affected perforators using the laser through a needle puncture guided by ultrasound and under ultrasound guided local anaesthesia.

Micro-phlebectomy

This is the medical term for the removal of large or medium-sized protruding varicose veins. This is done through a tiny incision of no more than 2 mm in length – enough to remove the vein while being cosmetically very acceptable. These small incisions don’t require stitches to close them. A small piece of adhesive tape is sufficient.
Microphlebectomy is an outpatient procedure, which is done under local anaesthesia and it is usually used to complete the surgery after killing the roots with the Laser/Microwave/HIFU (Sonovein). In other words, we kill the roots with the Laser, Microwave or HIFU (Sonovein) and treat the big branches with the Microphlebectomy.

Even though a large vein is removed, there is no detrimental effect on the blood flow or circulation in the leg. Blood flow is simply re-routed to another vein deeper in the leg resulting in better and more efficient circulation. The minor bruising from the procedure will disappear in a short time providing great looking and impressive results. The main benefit is the removal of unsightly bulge in the leg and relief in any pain and fatigue.

Micro Sclerotherapy

Anyone can suffer from thread veins and they can appear on any part of the body. It is largely harmless, but can cause distress as the sufferer often feels self-conscious.

Thread veins are smaller than varicose veins. They are usually very near the surface of the skin, red, blue, or purple in colour, and less than 1 to 2 mm in diameter.
Microsclerotherapy is the technique used to treat thread or spider veins. It is a relatively straightforward procedure which involves injecting a liquid into the veins which destroys them and causes them to disappear over time.
